Porn Free

News has been released this week that a licence application has been submitted for a fourth lap dancing club in West Bromwich High Street. I can’t see how a town of only 137,000 people can support that many strip joints. It could be that the clubs increase demand and draw men in from surrounding towns but why would Sandwell Council want to make one town a local mecca for perverts? West Bromwich lacks ammenities since the local council shut the swimming baths and built the £74m white elephant, The Public, but surely our town’s men can’t be that bored!

In the same week that I heard the above news I came across a new blog, Christ Centred Sexuality. There’s not much content yet but the tabs cover most bases when it comes to broken sexuality, from abuse and rape to pornography. There’s a link on the blog to thepinkcross.org which is a Christian ministry to the porn industry. The site is run by Shelley Lubben who is a wife, mother, an ordained chaplain to the sex industry and an ex-porn actress. She is ministering to women who are trapped by the guilt and shame of what they do with great compassion.

The rise of lap dancing clubs in West Bromwich will mean there are women suffering from the same sort of pain as porn actresses. A Christian lady I know told me about a conversation she had with young woman (perhaps only 18 years old) at the bus stop last year who was on her way to work at a strip club. The girl said she didn’t like what she did but said she had no option because the money was good.

On Wednesday evening at our youth group bible study I asked the lads at my table if they thought prostitutes would get into heaven. “No way!” they said, so I said they were in for a surprise as we were reading Matthew 21 on true repentance and belief in the good news:

“Which of the two did what his father wanted?”

“The first,” they answered.

Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. (Matthew 21:31)

The club nearest to Holy Trinity is called “Angels”. It’s about a quarter of a mile up the High Street and we’re the closest church. As tax collectors and prostitutes gathered around Jesus I pray that the name of the club might be prophetic for some women who work there. Anyone from Angels (or Club Arcadia, Heat for Men, Hell and Heaven or the other clubs in the town) who wants a fresh start and freedom from guilt will find a welcome and compassion at Holy Trinity as well as  finding help to know why Jesus is such good news for us all.
