2nd anniversary of being a vicar

At a funeral yesterday I was asked how long I’d being doing what I do.  “Two years tomorrow” I replied.  That always raises eyebrows in surprise, but not as much as saying I left Singapore and a career in structural engineering to serve Christ.  “That’s quite a change of direction” is the normal response.

A second anniversary seems to be a good time to look back and ahead.  Generalising, my first year was characterised by great enthusiasm and love for the work and people as much as  for the Lord.  The second year was a struggle against exhaustion and a sense that things were not going to be easy.  At the start of the third year we’ve got a mission, vision and emerging game plan.  Only time will tell if God will bless this work.

Ephesians 5:1 gives an appropriate sense of perspective.

Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
