Various Arab nations are suffering from cruel and heavy-handed (to put it mildly). The unique servant authority of Jesus Christ must be taught and put into practice if the Arab Spring is to bring lasting change to troubled nations.
First, Arab nations must realise that Jesus rules the world, he is God’s anointed King. When Jesus asked his follower Peter the question “who do you say I am?” Peter replied “You are the Christ (God’s anointed King).” Mark 8:29.
As God’s anointed King, we might expect him to rule by power, might and force, but that is not God’s way. Instead, Jesus said that he came to die and rise again.
“We are going up to Jerusalem,” he said, “and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, 34 who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise.” (Mark 10:33-34)
He died on the cruel cross for the sins of his people so that they might escape God’s justice. And so, as people of every class, from the lowest to the most powerful rulers, turn to Jesus and follow him, he challenges us to greatness in his Kingdom, not as powerful rulers but as servants of others, who make sacrifices and put the needs of others first:
whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:43-45)
And what if we don’t become part of his Kingdom? What if rulers and governments and kings and tyrants go their own way, and impose rule by force? Well then, Jesus has the last word. If we don’t respond to his love, grace, mercy and forgiveness then there will be none:
“And if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around his neck. 43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out. (Mark 9:42-43)
Leaders of nations, and citizens of the world, Jesus is the solution to all our troubles. He has made an irresistible offer. Turn to Christ and live to serve others (this is where the term “Public Servant” origniates from). Or face the fires of hell.
