From the vicarage – Feb 2014

Vicarage and meIt’s only 10 weeks until the national mission, A Passion for Life, which will be running all across the country, hosted by groups of local churches. For our part, Holy Trinity and the Calvary Church will unite in local mission. We will work together across the two congregations to make Christ known, and so Easter week 2014 should be a time of true blessing for the people of West Bromwich. In this month’s “From the Vicarage” I want to help you find the part God calls you to play in mission.

Where do we begin? We begin with God’s story of the world. God’s plan for the world must shape and inform our plans. So what do we find in the bible which shapes mission? God says to Abraham:

I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed. Genesis 26:4

I feel a growing sense that the great diversity we are experiencing in West Bromwich is part of God’s plan to bless all nations of the earth through the spiritual descendants of Abraham. God made this promise again and again to Abraham (Genesis 17:4-5, 18:18, 22:18) and the promise is repeated throughout the bible in Psalm 72:17, Isaiah 61:9, Matthew 28:19, Romans 4:17-18 and Galatians 3:8. And we find in the bible the amazing truth that all followers of Jesus Christ are descendants of Abraham by faith (Romans 9:8) and that God is right now blessing the nations of the world through his people.

That’s the big picture. So where will you fit in the plans for the week? If you are a member of Holy Trinity then you’ll have all sorts of opportunities to help run events and I hope you find lots to do. But if you only run an event or two then you’ll miss the real opportunity to bless the nations. The question God calls you to ask is “how can I help someone take a step toward faith in Jesus Christ and so become a spiritual descendant of Abraham and fulfil God’s promise to bless all the nations of the earth?” Who are you praying for? What conversations will you have? What deliberate choices will you make to lead others toward Christ?

And if you are reading this month’s magazine as someone who does not normally take part in the mission of Holy Trinity, then please look out for events during the week before Easter where you could take a step toward Christ and be a blessing to the nations.

Please keep our mission covered in prayer. Use the prayer sheets, join with others to pray. “Lord, fulfil your promise to Abraham in our generation. May all peoples be united in love for Christ as he first loved us. Amen.”
