Mentoring Leaders

Last November we created a vision statement at Holy Trinity to describe, in general terms, what church is for. We came up with a five point vision statement which begins “Holy Trinity Church exists to…“.

We now need a practical aim or goal which will motivate people to work together. This section from Carson Pue’s book, Mentoring Leaders sets out the requirement to develop and communicate a vision well:

All the great Christian leaders I have met in the past two decades have one thing in common: the ability to communicate vision so clearly, with such feeling, that people—many people—are moved to follow.

…Leaders today often experience outside pressure to produce or come forward with a new vision. However, producing the new vision is often easier than communicating it in such a way that others are moved to follow. Creating and communicating vision is an absolute requirement for leaders wanting to achieve their goals and future dreams for their ministry or organization.

…leadership “is the process of creating a vision for others and having the power to translate it into a reality and sustain it.”

Communicating the vision is the first step in strategic planning, and yet many ministry leaders do not take enough time, nor involve enough people, to effectively communicate the vision. A vision that is grasped by one’s entire congregation or all the constituents of one’s ministry can help everyone set goals to advance the ministry of the organization. A vision can also motivate and empower staff team members. Visioneering skills are used by great leaders to draw people toward themselves and their ideas through the communication of a vision. Without a strong vision, strategic plans cannot be properly set down, since there is no guiding principle or compelling ideal to plan around.

A vision is an aspiration or a description of a desirable future that exists within the leader’s soul that can inspire people, bring meaning to their work, mobilize them to action, and help them decide what to do and what not to do in the course of their work.
